Canadas auto market continued to make strong gains in June with positive posting up 11.6 per cent. That brings the year-to-date total up to 9.1 per cent meaning the market was leaner than predicted but still trending upwards.
This puts June in line with most June months this past decade, explains Dennis DesRosiers. A little softer than most but still very respectable.
Analysts suggest it is difficult to compare positive numbers this year to the doldrums of this time last year.
And while it may seem amazing to see Chrysler post a 101-per cent jump last month, that is compared to a period last year where the automaker was sheltered in bankruptcy protection in the U.S.
Similar for GM with sales of 25,000 up 16.4 per cent from June 2009, he added. But thats down from the 31,900 units they sold in 2008.
There are always some interesting things in these monthly sales numbers. For instance this month was the second in a row that the traditional Detroit three outperformed the import nameplates, he said, adding that two months in a row of this type of performance hadn't happened since the early 1990s.
On the import side, Toyota and Honda had negative results last month dropping 15.1 and 14 per cent respectively.
