AutoPlanet Automotive Group announced late last week it had acquired Performance Auto Group, Niagara's largest automotive group in a blockbuster deal.

The move sees Performance’s nine-store, 16-brand group move to the AutoPlanet’s growing family of dealerships. Financial details were not disclosed.

“We're very excited to bring our two organizations together,” said AutoPlanet president Glen Alizadeh. “John and Cam built their businesses on the same foundation as our company, hiring great people and treating their valued clients with respect. We hope to continue to build on this strong foundation.”

John Mann and Cam Champion established Performance Auto Group with one location on Lake Street in St. Catharines, Ont., in 1964. Today, Performance consists of nine dealerships carrying 16 brands in St. Catharines and Grimsby, a large used car operation, two collision centres and a detail centre.

The company employs over 400 full- and part-time people.

AutoPlanet Automotive Group is owned and operated by Glen and Steve Alizadeh and their sister May Allison. Their father, Sam Alizadeh, founded the auto group. With the acquisition of Performance, AutoPlanet now owns 23 dealerships in southern Ontario, nine of which are located in Brampton, including AutoPlanet Direct, Ontario's largest indoor used car showroom.

The others are located in Oakville, Brantford, Orangeville, Bolton, St. Catharines and Grimsby. The group now employs over 1,200 full- and part-time people.

Having acquired one of the strongest and deeply-rooted brand names in the retail automotive business, AutoPlanet Automotive Group will also be adopting Performance Auto Group as its new corporate identity. AutoPlanet will still be retained as the group’s brand for its stand-alone used-car dealerships.
