GM offering dealer incentives on remaining Saturn, Pontiac, report says

The Wall Street Journal is reporting General Motors Co. is offering large incentives to its dealers to speed up sales of any remaining Pontiac and Saturn inventory.

The letter to its U.S. dealers, leaked to the newspaper, indicate that GM would pay US$7,000 for every new Saturn or Pontiac moved to rental-vehicle or service-vehicle fleets, according to the report.

Moving the vehicles to fleet sales would classify them as used units (counting the dealer as the first owner) so they could in turn be offered for hefty discounts.

The paper says the offer expires on Jan. 4
