TADA job board ‘bursting’ with positions

The Trillium Automobile Dealers Association is looking for a few good men and women – a few hundred, actually – to fill vacancies at dealerships all over Ontario.

Visit the career opportunities link on the association website on any given month and job seekers will find between 320 and 400 positions. The positions, explained TADA rep Michele Kearny, run the gamut from sales and administration to F&I, fixed operations and general management.

“Every corner of the dealership is well represented,” she said, adding that roughly 85 per cent of the jobs are full time. “We’re bursting.”

Kearny and the TADA chalk up the massive influx of job openings on their site to a few factors. First is the sheer volume brought in by the amalgamation of the Toronto association with the Ontario association a few years ago. That meant new jobs coming from all corners of the province.

Second, she said, is the same thing seen across industries in North America: “Our work force, on average, is getting older and we are seeing more people leave the workplace than being replaced.”

To help inject young blood, the TADA said it is working to attract young people to the industry. It allows users to post resumes to the site that dealers can read through.

Tips for Powerful Postings
Dealers should think of their job postings much in the same way successful dealers approach their online used-car listings.

Tell a story, Kearny said. Dealers have to set themselves to attract the top talent.

“Competition is fierce. You can’t just post that you are looking for a tech and that you’ll pay well. You actually have to say why someone would want to work at your dealership,” she said.

“When you look at 120 job postings in the service department and 15 to 20 of the dealerships are within 20 kilometres of each other, like in the GTA, you have to take that next step and tell people why they should work for you.

“The younger generation is all about choice; tell them why they should chose you,” she said.

Job vacancies are posted for a month and cost $75 for association members. Kearny said that rate is a fraction of other popular online job sites.

Think the TADA can’t muster the web traffic your posting needs to get noticed?

Think again, she said, noting tada.ca generates over 400,000 hits a month.

“Attracting the right people is all about originality. Dealers should have their eyes open and look for the type of personality that would best fit within their store and understand what amount of training will be required.”
