Toyota Canada recalls '03 Sequoia

Toyota Canada Inc. has announced it will conduct a voluntary safety recall on approximately select 2003 Sequoia sport utility vehicles after issues surrounding the vehicle stability control system.

The recall affects roughly 1,500 vehicles in Canada and the company stresses there have been “no reported accidents or injuries in Canada or the U.S. associated with this condition.”

According to Toyota, the “voluntary recall” stems from complaints of stuttered acceleration because of “improper logic” of the skid control programming.

The system could potentially activate at low speed for a few seconds following acceleration from a stopped position. As a result, the Sequoia may not accelerate as fast as the driver expects.

“Toyota is voluntarily launching this recall as part of our commitment to investigating customer complaints more aggressively and to responding quickly to issues we identify in our vehicles,” the company said in a release.

This issue was first identified in 2003 when a technical service bulletin was published addressing the issue.

Toyota says it changed production during 2003 and has been “ conducting ongoing replacement of the Skid Control Engine Control Unit (ECU) in Sequoias impacted by this condition.”  

Repairs consist of a system upgrade and will be performed by Toyota dealers soon. All affected customers will be notified by mail at the end of May.
