GM’s Canadian Engineering Centre in Oshawa, Ont., has a “global mandate” to develop environmentally friendly fuels and communications technologies for GM vehicles worldwide and an $850-million budget budget to finance the necessary R&D.

“Canada has the bench strength and green technology and the connected car is where the puck is going to be,” said GM Canada V-P Stephen Carlisle.

In a release, Carlisle said research projects would include developing wireless systems that help drivers navigate around traffic jams and improve fuel efficiency. There will also be research on alternative fuels and light-weight materials.

The automaker says the hiring will double its staff at the centre, though some of the work will be done at GM’s cold-weather testing facility in Kapuskasing, Ont.
