CBC is reporting that General Motors is planning to restart some engine production next week in its engine plant located in St. Catharines, Ont.
This is ahead of the more extensive restarting of production across North America announced by General Motors in the United States.
According to the CBC, Unifor president Jerry Dias confirmed the news on Wednesday.
He said there will be a staged reopening on Monday and roughly 300 workers, all of them volunteers, will begin working in the engine plant.
In order in ensure the safety of the workers returning the to the operations, safety measures have been put into place, such as temperature checks of all workers and staff using heat cameras. Those who show elevated temperatures will be refused entry to the plant.
The St. Catharines plant employs some 1,224 workers.
