Sources out of Japan indicate Honda says it will start selling an electric vehicle and hybrid in North America and Japan by 2012.
Honda president Takanobu Ito revealed the plan Tuesday when speaking with reporters at one of the automaker’s facilities.
Though exact details concerning vehicles were not given, the move is seen as an effort to catch up to rival Nissan, which has commenced taking orders for its all-electric Leaf set to hit showrooms in the U.S. and Japan by the end of this year.
Honda already builds hybrid versions of its CR-Z and Insight. This is the first mention of the company’s plans to offer a plug-in hybrid and electric model.
