Infiniti says EV will hit showrooms in 2013

Infiniti confirmed it is planning to release a luxury EV in Canada in 2013 and released a sketch of vehicle late last week.

The Infiniti EV is said to be a “stylish, high performance” five-seater with zero emissions technology.

“This future EV will play a major part of Infiniti’s eco performance strategy that will see a greater focus on hybrid and EV technology,” said Wendy Durward, director of Infiniti Canada.

Not much in terms of design is discernable from the blurry sketch the automaker released but Durward says the company is committed to using the best emission-reducing technology without skimping on driving performance – “A pledge that will become more evident soon with the upcoming introduction of our new Infiniti M Hybrid,” she added.

The 2012 Infiniti M35h, which features Infiniti’s Direct Response Hybrid technology, is scheduled to make its North American debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show in November.

The M Hybrid is based on the current M sedan and boasts an estimated 302-horsepower, 3.5-litre V6 supported by a 50 kW (67 horsepower est.) electric motor.

Infiniti says the M35h will be able to be driven on electric power alone at speeds up to 80 km/h thanks to a compact Lithium-ion battery pack.

Dealers can expect to see the M35h in their showrooms by next spring.
